In 1978, Neil Young and Devo collaborated on an ultra-twisted version of 'Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)' at Different Fur Studios in San Francisco. The song's lyrics were changed to reference 'Johnny Spud' instead of Johnny Rotten, and the line 'Rust never sleeps' was added, which would later become the title of Young's next album. The slogan was originally used by Devo to refer to the corruption of innocence and de-evolution of the planet. Young interpreted it as a metaphor for the corrosion he faced in his career.
